Why Adipose-Derived SVF?

  • Placenta (Umbilical Cord Blood)
    SVF is obtained from umbilical cord blood collected from the placenta. Because this source provides relatively “younger” SVF, it is often used for cartilage regeneration and regenerative applications. However, the available quantity of SVF is limited.
  • Bone Marrow
    SVF is harvested from inside the bone. Although SVF can be extracted from bone marrow, the overall yield is very low compared to other sources.
  • Blood

Human adipose tissue is a rich reservoir of stem cells. Through liposuction, a large quantity of adult stem cells—specifically mesenchymal stem cells—can be obtained.

These cells can be extracted and used on the same day without cell culture, allowing for same-day extraction and treatment.
The stem cell-rich component derived in this process is known as Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF).

The human body possesses an innate ability to heal and regenerate itself and is composed of a wide variety of specialized tissues and cells. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are distributed throughout the body, including in the bone marrow, adipose tissue, and skin.

MSCs have the unique ability to self-renew while also differentiating into multiple cell types. For this reason, they are classified as adult stem cells, also commonly referred to as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

In addition to their differentiation capacity, MSCs exert powerful therapeutic effects through the secretion of bioactive factors that stimulate surrounding cells—known as the paracrine effect. Through this mechanism, MSCs are associated with a wide range of regenerative benefits, including immune modulation, angiogenesis, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, prevention of cell death, and tissue repair.

The Difference Between PRP Fat Grafting and SVF Fat Grafting

The most fundamental difference between PRP and SVF lies in the presence of stem cells.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is derived from blood and does not contain stem cells.
In contrast, SVF (Stromal Vascular Fraction) is a cell population derived from adipose tissue that does include adipose-derived stem cells.

PRP can help promote temporary graft retention and is primarily used to improve damaged skin and support wound healing. However, PRP does not activate cells through differentiation or true regeneration, nor does it possess the biological functions of stem cells that actively support long-term fat graft survival.

In other words, PRP lacks the regenerative capabilities of stem cells—such as differentiation and tissue regeneration—that play a critical role in enhancing and stabilizing fat graft engraftment.

PRP and SVF may appear similar in that both are derived from the body and are used to enhance fat graft survival. However, they are fundamentally different in their biological roles and mechanisms.

SVF contains stem cells, allowing it to generate new cells and support cellular differentiation. In contrast, PRP does not contain stem cells and functions primarily by aiding the healing of existing cells rather than creating new ones.

Another key difference lies in how they are obtained. PRP is easily and conveniently harvested from blood, whereas SVF must be extracted from adipose (fat) tissue.

Because SVF includes adipose-derived stem cells, it actively promotes the activation and proliferation of transplanted fat cells. This enables the grafted fat to survive long term, often in a semi-permanent manner. For this reason, SVF is highly effective at significantly improving the fat graft survival rate.

In addition to stem cells, SVF also contains a variety of growth factors. These cells and bioactive components work synergistically to stimulate new blood vessel formation, enhance blood supply, support tissue differentiation, and promote tissue regeneration—all of which help transplanted fat cells survive longer and more stably.

Conventional fat grafting uses autologous fat alone as the grafting material. While it is effective in creating natural-looking volume, the fat survival rate is relatively low—approximately 30–40%. As a result, a significant portion of the grafted fat is absorbed over time, and the results typically last only 1 to 2 years.

In contrast, Cellon SVF stem cell–assisted fat grafting combines autologous fat with adipose-derived stem cells, fundamentally improving the survival environment of the transplanted fat cells.
